Album Review: The Unknowns New Release Review

“Stay Down Kat” - Official Review by Jonny Roberts

Voices as smooth as molasses, coaxing you into a velvet wingback chair, only to take you by the hand and guide you onto the dance floor as soon as you sit. That is the of The Unknowns latest EP Uninivited. This five song EP, recorded at Empty Sea Studios with with producer Michael Connelly, brings us beautiful melodies bolstered by multiple part harmonies that is reminiscent of Motown soul. It doesn’t take long to hear it either. The first single on the record, Stay Down Kat, written by guitarist and singer Catie Bowell brings you immediately in with a guiater riff that causes a sense of curiosity and longing to hear more. Sometimes that curiosity can be followed by a let down.. But not in this case. Each part and layer of the song seems to bring you further in until you’re right in the center, and then it lets you have it; a horn solo that will make your face curl up like you sucked a lemon and vocal power that seems to ruffle your hair through the speaker.

This group of women aren’t just a one trick pony though, they continually flex their musical muscles throughout the record. They keep the listener on their toes with different styles, sprinkling in slight rumba sounds, soe flamenco guitar in one song and as previous stated soul throughout.

Show support to this talented group and gie it a listen and when you like it, go out and see them play. The Unknowns have been together since 2018 and have played all over Washington, Idaho and are ultimately working towards a European tour in July of 2024. The EP is out NOW and streaming across all platforms.
