Music: Ritual Records Recommendations

Gaytheist, “How Long Have I Been on Fire?”

This is Gaytheist’s fifth, and most cohesive album to date. The Portland punk trio rips through 13 songs in about a half hour, and it’s a hell of a lot of fun the whole way through. They also have just about the best name in rock ‘n’ roll.

Miles Davis, “On the Corner”

Maybe DAvis’ strangest record, peppered with electronic beats, and more jangly than anything he’s done. It was panned upon its release, but it’s truly unique, and shows his diverse abilities. It’s the anti-”Kind of Blue,” if you will.

Mount Saturn, “O Great Moon”

Local doom metal powerhouses, now sadly on hiatus. This is their first vinyl pressing, and it’s a sludgy, dirty, and just plain great ep.

Saul Williams, Saul Williams

Hip-hop by way of dance, thrash, spoken word, and erudite poetry. Williams eponymous debut album feels like a dance-riot come to life with its frenetic energy and unbridled sincerity. One of my favorite albums ever, and the repressing finally comes out some time this month.

Dillinger Escape Plan, “Ire Works”

This is another reissue, which just became available last week. Ire Works is DEP’s third album, and at times seemingly their noisiest. It’s intense, brutal, unflinching, and surprisingly pretty.
