Song Review: Cycles by Pantsuitguy

“Cycles” by Pantsuitguy

Song review by Jonny Roberts

Pantsuitguy’s latest single Cycles dropped on the October 13th and since the drop I have contributed a significant number of its streaming numbers, I am sure. There is something entrancing about this new single that I can’t quite put my finger on it, but what I keep coming back to is the feeling of a flying dream. The weightless alien feeling of running, leaping, and not coming back down. It could be the way that the dreamy vocals sit in the mix, bringing you deeper into the song, or maybe the way the simple kick snare pattern propel you forward. It could also be the way a powerful, yet light guitar riff melodically bounces and moves around seemingly with its own life, but likely it’s the way these elements are all expertly woven together, a perfect blend, none standing out and none getting lost.

The lead singer of Pantsuitguy, Juliet says that the song was written about falling in and out of the same toxic patterns, looked at through the lens of an unhealthy relationship. Knowing that as you listen through again (which you will) the movement of the song makes perfect sense. I love the way the song creates and releases tension at the right times, not letting you relax, pulling your back off your chair and your elbows to your knees. It continues this pattern, building and releasing until it all finally culminates in this glorious chaotic ending, giving you the relief you didn’t know was needed throughout the song. Then just when you thought you didn’t need anything else, they give you just what you weren’t looking for, a jazzy little guitar riff that lets you know its ok to settle back into your chair. Cycles is streaming now, stream it and keep a lookout for whatever Pantsuitguy is going to do next, because whatever it is you won’t want to miss it.
